December: Staff Profile
In this issue of the Staff Profile, we would like to feature our very own Tina Skibba.
I absolutely never thought I would be in the Flooring Industry as an Inside Salesperson. Yet, Here I am, almost two years with Area Floors and I’m having a blast.
I graduated from Franklin High School, in Portland, nine years ago. Originally I had planned to become a psychologist, but researching that particular career I discovered it would take nearly ten years of school before I could open my own practice. That felt like forever at the time, so I moved onto other things.
I started my working life at Wells Fargo for a few years as a teller. During that time I discovered that I am very detail oriented and analytical. For the next five years I worked in various positions with in the accounting and finance industry. I also began to feel as though I needed something more to my work; something more creative. I spent those years thinking of different hobbies that might give me that creative fix I longed for. It was then that I decided to combine my desire to help people with my creative drive and pursue a career in Interior Design.
I was fortunate to have friends who already worked in the design industry. One of them was a bookkeeper for an Interior Design firm and she introduced me to the owner of the company. Over the next year and a half I worked as the owner’s assistant and had the wonderful opportunity to job shadow her.
Unfortunately, business began to slow down and it was time for me to move on. One day, I received a call from a local tile vendor who said “I have the perfect job for you, call Michele at Area Floors.” Even though I was a bit overwhelmed with the task of learning the flooring industry, I knew it would be a great and fulfilling challenge. I decided to go for it and two interviews later I joined the team.
I love working on projects of all shapes and sizes. Most recently I worked with Amy Troute, owner of Design for Home, on the Begeij house
(you can read more about this project and Amy Troute in our Industry Spotlight). I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to help educate customers in their design choices. It is fun to see how excited my customers are when I help them find the right product. Some of my favorite clients are contractors that need help choosing materials for a customer and give me free reign to pick out the products.
I also enjoys learning about other cultures and places. Recently, I took the trip of a lifetime to the Netherlands. When I’m not at Area Floors, I spend my time with my boyfriend, Keith, and our two cats, Siu Mau and Ash.
